Historical Marker: Riverhills Park

Published by under Bowl

Riverhills Park is one of Hillsborough County’s gem parks.  Located in Temple Terrace, this park lies along the north side of the Hillsborough River.  There a historical marker commemorates the Spanish exploration of the immediate area.

SPANISH EXPLORATION OF TEMPLE TERRACE

April 25 & 26, 1757

On April 25, 1757, as they explored the Hillsborough River (Rio De San Julian Y Artiaga) and searched for pine trees for ship masts, Don Francisco Maria Celi, Captain of the Spanish Royal Fleet, and 19 armed members of the expedition camped in this vicinity.

Here the Spaniards found “pine trees of great magnitude” and the river water “very delicate in taste”.  They reveled in it for it was “aqua buena  y clara”.  They erected a cross naming the forest “El Pinal De La Cruz De Santa Teresa”.

This is a beautiful location, perfect for canoeing and kayaking.

Park Art – Gaslight Square

Published by under Bowl

As I indicated in my previous post, new sculptures are popping up downtown.

Here is a piece (again, untitled and uncredited) located in Gaslight Park.

To  me, the components are arranged in a cascade, and I get a sense of downward motion when looking at this piece.  Not in a falling down manner, but rather like returning to earth.

What do you think?

Aldermans Ford Park

Published by under Bowl

Like a lot of people,  we like to ride our bikes.   Here are some pictures of the 2 mile paved trail at Aldermans Ford Park.    It’s one of the lushest I’ve ever riden on.

MacDill Park, Part I

Published by under Bowl

Located at the northwest corner of Ashley Drive and Whiting Street, MacDill Park is currently hosting Big Max.  MacDill Park was established to honor MacDill AFB and the men and women who are currently serving and those that have served in the past.  Over the next three days, the Brass Bowl will showcase some of the plaque’s that are scattered along this riverside park.  These give us a glimpse into the history of MacDill Air Force Base.

Courthouse Square Park

Published by under Bowl

This little park covers a city block, bordered by Kennedy Blvd to the south, Morgan St to the west, Marion St to the north and Pierce St to the east.  There is a lot of flotsam in this park, and I will be posting some of it in the next few days.

Kennedy Blvd is lower left, Pierce St lower right.  View is towards the north west.
