Sacred Heart Church
One of the most photographed buildings in Tampa is the Sacred Heart Church on the corner of Florida Ave and Twiggs St. Built in 1904 and dedicated on Jan 15, 1905, this granite and white marble structure is an example of Georgia marble cruciform design. Built during Jesuit auspices (1888-2005), the Romanesque architecture building served as the Jesuit missionary center for central and southern Florida, along with its significant roles in the development and growth of Tampa. The Church has over 70 stained glass windows, manufactured in the late 1800′s, by Franz Mayer Co of Munich Germany (still in business). The 17 verticals are the major works here, each using a Renaissance “single perspective” vantage point designed to lead the eye to a horizon line by way of a centered prominent visual component.
This is the second structure on this site.In 1859 a frame church was built, with two additional wings built in 1883. Beginning in February 2010, the parish will begin celebrating 150 years in Tampa.
